Tracker vs immobiliser: which one actually stops the vehicle being driven away?
Prevention and recovery are different jobs. Why a location alert is not the same as a barrier to driving.
Updated 6 October 2026
The direct answer
An immobiliser is designed to prevent normal driving without the required authorisation. A tracker is primarily designed to report a vehicle's location, helping it to be found if it is stolen. A tracker alone should not be assumed to stop somebody driving away.
Some products combine tracking with other security functions. Check what the specific system does, how it is monitored and what response is provided. The label 'tracker' does not establish that it also immobilises the car.
What an additional immobiliser contributes
CAN Phantom adds a personal sequence using compatible controls already in the vehicle. The driver needs that separate authorisation before the vehicle can be driven normally, even if a usable key is present. It re-arms automatically when the vehicle is switched off.
That is a prevention-focused function, not a promise that the vehicle cannot be entered, damaged, towed or loaded onto another vehicle. Keep the limits in view when deciding whether other layers would be worthwhile.
What to ask about a tracker
- Who receives an alert, who monitors the system, and what happens when a suspected theft is reported?
- Are there ongoing subscription charges, and what functions stop if the subscription expires?
- What power supply, coverage and maintenance requirements apply to that product?
- Does your insurer require a particular tracker or approval, and how must it be kept active?
- If an immobilisation function is advertised, what exactly is included and who is authorised to operate it safely?
When using both makes sense
If your priority is stopping unauthorised driving, look at the authorisation barrier. If you also want a route to locating the vehicle after theft or physical removal, investigate a suitable tracking system. Those are separate needs, so one product does not automatically replace the other.
Start with any insurer requirements, then compare confirmed functions and ongoing costs. Do not assume a premium reduction or policy acceptance simply because you have added security. Obtain an answer from your insurer for your policy.
Where CAN Phantom fits — and what AccuKey® supplies
The confirmed CAN Phantom service described by AccuKey® is a CAN-bus immobiliser, not a vehicle-tracking service. We do not present it as a recovery system or promise location reporting. Check the CAN Phantom service page for installation details and the confirmed manufacturer warranty.
If a tracker indicates that a stolen vehicle is nearby, pass the information to the police and the monitoring provider where applicable. Do not confront suspects or try to retrieve it yourself. A location is useful evidence, not an invitation to take personal risks.
