Lost keys

Lost your only car key? Here's what happens next

All-keys-lost work is a specialist job, and it is a routine part of what we do. It takes longer than a planned spare and the procedure varies between vehicles, but for most cars and vans it can be completed where the vehicle is.

The first step is identifying the vehicle properly. Everything else follows from that.

The process, in order

  • Vehicle identification — registration, make, model and year, so we know the exact key and security system involved.
  • Entitlement checks — proof the vehicle is yours, such as the V5C, plus photo ID.
  • Confirmation of what the job needs, and a fixed price before anyone travels.
  • Attendance at the vehicle, key supplied and programmed, old keys removed from the system where appropriate.

Why vehicle identification matters so much

Two cars that look identical on the driveway can use completely different key systems depending on build year, trim and where they were originally sold. The key, the equipment and the procedure all follow from the correct identification.

Getting this right at the quote stage is what prevents wasted visits and surprise costs. It is the whole reason AccuKey IQ starts with your registration.

Why complexity varies, and when a dealer route is needed

Some vehicles are straightforward once entitlement is confirmed. Others use tightly controlled security data, and a small number of newer models can only be completed through the manufacturer or a franchised dealer.

We will tell you which category your vehicle falls into before you commit to anything. We do not promise that every vehicle can be finished at the roadside — that would not be honest, and it varies genuinely by model.

Security and discretion

We work under SERMI accreditation, which governs authorised access to vehicle security information. Entitlement checks exist to protect vehicle owners, and we apply them consistently.

For the same reason, we do not publish details of how vehicle security systems are accessed.

Common questions

Do I need to have the car towed anywhere?
In most cases, no — the work is done where the vehicle is. Where a manufacturer route is required for that model, we will say so upfront.
Can the lost key be cancelled so it no longer starts the car?
On many vehicles, yes — old keys can be removed from the system when new keys are programmed. It depends on the vehicle, and we will confirm for yours.
What proof of ownership do you need?
Typically the V5C registration document or equivalent evidence of entitlement, together with photo ID matching it.
How long does an all-keys-lost job take?
Longer than a spare — the procedure differs by vehicle, so we give you a realistic time when we confirm the job rather than a blanket figure.
