CAN Phantom Immobiliser Installation
Stop them driving it away.
People searching for a Ghost immobiliser usually want the same thing: an extra layer of security that needs the driver's own authorisation before the vehicle can be driven.
CAN Phantom is a separate, British-developed CAN-bus immobiliser built for exactly that. AccuKey® supplies and fits it across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire and the wider North West.
They got into the car. They still didn't take it.
Getting into a vehicle and being able to drive it away are two very different things. Additional immobilisation is there to put another barrier between unauthorised access and actually taking the vehicle.
Footage shared with the owner's permission. It shows people gaining access and working around the vehicle for about 52 seconds. The vehicle does not leave.
Video description and transcript
Customer-authorised CCTV of a real attempted vehicle theft. People gain access to and work around the vehicle for around 52 seconds. The vehicle does not leave during the footage.
- Night-time CCTV from a customer’s property. Background audio is present. No intelligible dialogue has been transcribed.
- Two people approach a parked car on a residential driveway.
- One opens the driver's door and gets into the vehicle while the other waits nearby.
- They spend time moving inside and around the vehicle.
- The vehicle does not move and is not driven away during the footage.
Looking for a Ghost immobiliser?
If you've been searching for a Ghost immobiliser, you're most likely after an additional CAN-bus immobiliser — one that asks for a personal code before the vehicle will drive. "Ghost immobiliser" has become a common way of describing that whole type of product.
The system AccuKey® supplies and fits is CAN Phantom. It is a different brand and a different product from the Autowatch Ghost, with its own features and certification, but it sits in the same modern aftermarket immobiliser category and does the same basic job. As with any system, your vehicle's compatibility has to be checked first.
What is CAN Phantom?
CAN Phantom is a dedicated aftermarket immobiliser that works with the vehicle's CAN-bus electronics. The current unit, the CP24, is the second generation of the system. Once fitted, the vehicle needs your personal sequence — entered on compatible buttons it already has — before it can be driven.
- CP24 unit, built on the original CAN Phantom
- Personal, changeable PIN sequence using existing vehicle controls
- 12–24V compatible — cars, vans and larger vehicles
- UN116 / R116 certified, according to the manufacturer
- Valet Mode for garages, servicing and valeting
- Wi-Fi settings interface and emergency PIN card
- Designed, developed and manufactured in the UK
- Two-year manufacturer warranty from the date of installation
CAN Phantom vs Ghost immobiliser
CAN Phantom and the Autowatch Ghost are made by different manufacturers. Both are aftermarket immobilisers, and both are designed to add another driver-authorisation step on top of the vehicle's factory security.
Each has its own features, its own certification and its own list of compatible vehicles. We don't publish a spec-by-spec table, because we'd only want to compare figures both manufacturers have confirmed. What we can tell you is what CAN Phantom offers, whether it suits your vehicle, and how we fit it.
If you originally searched for a Ghost immobiliser, CAN Phantom gives you another serious CAN-bus immobiliser option to consider.
What is a CAN-bus immobiliser?
Modern vehicles run on a network of control units talking to each other — the CAN-bus. A CAN-bus immobiliser works with that network to add an extra check before normal driving is allowed. Rather than relying only on the key being present, the vehicle also waits for the driver to authorise the journey.
How that's connected inside a particular vehicle is deliberately not something we publish. Keeping fitting details private is part of what makes the system worth having.
Why add extra security to a modern vehicle?
Today's cars already have good factory security. The difficulty is that theft has moved on with them. Relay attacks on keyless cars, cloned or reprogrammed keys, stolen genuine keys and other electronic methods all aim at the same thing: getting the vehicle started without the owner.
CAN Phantom states that its system protects against key cloning, relay theft, key theft and hot-wiring. The reasoning is straightforward — whichever way someone gets a key or a key signal, the vehicle still needs a sequence only you know. No system makes a vehicle impossible to steal, but another layer makes it a much harder job.
Still on one key? That's worth sorting too — see spare car keys, or how keyless smart keys work.
How CAN Phantom works
- 01
Start the vehicle
Get in and start up as you normally would.
- 02
Authorisation required
The vehicle waits for your personal sequence.
- 03
Enter your sequence
Press your chosen combination on existing buttons.
- 04
Drive normally
It re-arms automatically when you switch off.
Which buttons can be used depends on the vehicle. We set it up with you at handover.
UN116 certified vehicle security
UN Regulation No. 116 — also written R116 or ECE Regulation No. 116 — is the international standard for protecting vehicles against unauthorised use, and it covers immobilisers. For an aftermarket product, certification means it has been assessed against a recognised regulation rather than simply described as secure.
CAN Phantom states that the CP24 is UN116 certified and describes its system as the only CAN-bus immobiliser carrying this official certification.
UN116 is not the same as Thatcham approval, and we don't claim Thatcham approval for CAN Phantom. If your insurer asks for a particular approval, check with them first.
Immobiliser or tracker — what's the difference?
Immobiliser
Designed to stop the vehicle being driven away in the first place. The aim is that it never leaves the driveway.
Tracker
Designed to locate the vehicle and help recover it after it has been taken. Some insurers ask for one on higher-value vehicles.
They do different jobs, and plenty of owners run both. If you're weighing up a tracker or an immobiliser for a keyless car, the question is whether you'd rather make the theft harder or the recovery easier — and many people decide they want both.
Garage, service or valet? Use Valet Mode.
Valet Mode lets you hand the vehicle to a garage, valeter or trusted driver without sharing your personal sequence. You choose how long it stays in that mode, and the system returns to normal afterwards.
British-designed vehicle security
CAN Phantom states that its system is designed, developed and manufactured in the UK, by CAN-PHANTOM Limited. The CP24 followed more than two years of development on the original unit.

CAN Phantom and Ghost immobiliser questions
- What is a Ghost immobiliser?
- "Ghost immobiliser" usually refers to the Autowatch Ghost, a CAN-bus immobiliser. The phrase is now widely used as shorthand for any aftermarket immobiliser that needs a driver code before the vehicle can be driven.
- Is CAN Phantom a Ghost immobiliser?
- No. CAN Phantom is a separate product made by a different company, CAN-PHANTOM Limited. It is not an Autowatch product.
- Is CAN Phantom an alternative to a Ghost immobiliser?
- Yes. Both sit in the aftermarket CAN-bus immobiliser category and both add a driver-authorisation step before the vehicle can be driven. CAN Phantom has its own features and certification.
- What is the difference between CAN Phantom and Autowatch Ghost?
- They are different products from different manufacturers, with their own features, certification and vehicle compatibility lists. AccuKey® supplies and fits CAN Phantom, so that is the system we can advise on in detail.
- I searched for a Ghost immobiliser — can AccuKey® help?
- If what you want is an extra immobiliser that needs a personal code before the car will drive, yes. We supply and fit CAN Phantom, which offers that type of protection. We will check your vehicle first.
- Which is better, CAN Phantom or Ghost?
- There is no honest one-word answer. It depends on your vehicle, its compatibility with each system, and the features you value. If you started out looking for a Ghost, CAN Phantom is another serious CAN-bus option to consider.
- What is a CAN-bus immobiliser?
- An immobiliser that works with the vehicle's own electronics to add an extra authorisation step. Having the key is no longer enough on its own — the driver also has to enter a personal sequence before the vehicle can be driven normally.
- How does CAN Phantom work?
- You get in and start the car as usual, then enter your personal sequence using compatible buttons already in the vehicle. Once accepted, you drive normally. When the vehicle is switched off, the system re-arms by itself.
- Is CAN Phantom UN116 certified?
- CAN Phantom states that its CP24 unit is UN116 certified and describes it as the only CAN-bus immobiliser carrying this official certification. It also references R116 / ECE Regulation No. 116.
- What does UN116 / R116 certification mean?
- UN Regulation No. 116 (often written R116 or ECE R116) is the international regulation covering protection of motor vehicles against unauthorised use, including immobilisers. Certification means the product has been assessed against that regulation.
- Is CAN Phantom Thatcham approved?
- We have not seen evidence of Thatcham approval for CAN Phantom, so we do not claim it. Its certification is UN116 / R116, which is a different scheme. Check with your insurer if a specific approval matters to your policy.
- Can CAN Phantom help protect against relay theft?
- CAN Phantom states that it protects against relay theft, key cloning, key theft and hot-wiring. The principle is simple: even if a key signal is relayed or copied, the vehicle still needs your personal sequence before it will drive.
- What happens if somebody steals my actual car key?
- With CAN Phantom fitted, the key alone should not be enough to drive the vehicle away — the personal sequence is still required. Keep your sequence private and separate from your keys.
- Does CAN Phantom work with keyless cars?
- Keyless and push-button-start vehicles are a common reason people fit one. Compatibility still depends on the exact make, model and year, so we check your vehicle first.
- Does CAN Phantom use a PIN?
- Yes — a personal, changeable sequence entered using compatible controls in the vehicle. You also receive an emergency PIN on a card at installation.
- What is Valet Mode?
- A mode for handing the vehicle to a garage, valeter or other trusted person without giving them your personal sequence. It can be set for a chosen period.
- Does CAN Phantom broadcast Wi-Fi constantly?
- CAN Phantom uses a Wi-Fi settings interface for things like Valet Mode. We have not yet confirmed from the manufacturer exactly when it broadcasts, so ask us and we will give you a confirmed answer for your installation.
- Is CAN Phantom made in Britain?
- CAN Phantom states that the system is designed, developed and manufactured in the UK.
- How long does installation take?
- It depends on the vehicle and installation. We will give you a realistic appointment length when we confirm compatibility.
- Is AccuKey® an approved CAN Phantom installer?
- Yes. AccuKey® appears in CAN Phantom's official installer directory under Rochdale. CAN Phantom states that its installers are approved and trained by the company.
- Can you install CAN Phantom at my home or workplace?
- Usually, yes. We are a mobile service and fit on driveways and in car parks where there is safe access to the vehicle and suitable conditions.
- How much does CAN Phantom installation cost?
- Message us with your registration and we will confirm compatibility and the supplied-and-fitted price before anything is booked.
- Do you install Ghost-style / CAN-bus immobilisers in Manchester?
- Yes. We fit CAN Phantom across Manchester and Greater Manchester, including Rochdale, Bury, Oldham and Bolton.
- Do you cover Lancashire?
- Yes — including Rossendale, Burnley, Blackburn and Preston, among other areas.
- Do you cover Cheshire?
- Yes — including Warrington. Send us your postcode and we will confirm the appointment.
- How do I know if my vehicle is compatible?
- Send us your registration. We check the exact vehicle before booking and will never assume a vehicle is compatible.
