Dealer or auto locksmith for a car key?
Both routes are legitimate. The deciding factor is usually your vehicle, not the badge on the building.

Two legitimate routes
Franchised dealers have manufacturer systems and genuine parts to hand. Accredited independent specialists have professional equipment, authorised access to security data and the ability to come to the vehicle.
Neither is automatically better. The right answer depends on the vehicle, the situation and what matters most to you.
Where a dealer route is required
- Certain newer vehicles where the manufacturer restricts key supply or programming.
- Specific security platforms that cannot be serviced independently.
- Cases where only a genuine manufacturer key can be supplied for that model.
Where a mobile specialist tends to suit better
- The vehicle cannot be driven to a dealership because there is no working key.
- You would rather not lose a day to a workshop visit — the work happens at your home or workplace.
- You want a fixed price confirmed against your registration before anyone attends.
- You need a straightforward spare key for a vehicle already in normal service.
What to look for either way
Ask whether the provider checks entitlement, whether they hold recognised accreditation such as SERMI, whether the price is fixed against your specific vehicle, and what warranty covers the key and programming.
We will tell you when a dealer route is the honest answer for your car. Sending a technician on a job that cannot be completed helps nobody.
